About the Role

Barrack Lane Medical Centre is looking for a GP to join their busy town centre practice to provide maternity cover until 30 September 2026.  We require cover for 6 sessions a week working Monday - Wednesday.

Working as part of our multidisciplinary team, you will have the opportunity to support and care for a diverse patient group.  The role will include all general duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care, excluding duty sessions and home visits, as well as:
  • Undertaking a variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork, reports and correspondence and path results in a timely fashion;
  • Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting medical problems, whether self-referred or referred from other healthcare workers within the organisation;
  • Assessing the healthcare needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems;
  • Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness;
  • Developing care plans for health in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols;
  • Providing health education;
  • Recording clear consultation notes to agreed standards;
  • Collecting data for audit purposes and complying with QOF requirements;
  • Delivering enhanced services;
  • Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions;
  • All general duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.


About the Candidate

All applicants should have the following qualifications:
 
  • Fully qualified GP with GMC registration
  • Annual appraisal and revalidation (when appropriate)
  • Be on the NHSE medical performers list
and skills, including:
  • Good understanding and experience of chronic disease management, and primary prevention and screening services;
  • Ability to take responsibility for your own career development, learning and performance and are responsible for ensuring that all your mandatory training is in date;
  • Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies and guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety;
  • Commitment to life-long learning and audit to ensure evidence-based best practice;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a confidential manner.

About Us

Barrack Lane is a busy practice in the town centre of Ipswich, Suffolk.  We have a diverse  practice population of over 20,500 patients.  The practice is based on two sites, the main surgery in the centre of the town, and a branch surgery at Stoke Park. 

Our clinical team is made up of GP partners, salaried GPs, advanced nurse practitioners, advanced care practitioners, paramedics, physicians associate, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and a practice nursing team and HCAs.  This team is supported by a strong administrative, coding and care-navigating team.

Barrack Lane is part of a PCN (Primary Care Network) with Ivry Street Medical Centre, in Ipswich, and the two practices cover a population of 32,000 patients.  The PCN allows the practices to share resources and offer an enhanced service to our patients.  The PCN employs care co-ordinators and social prescribers to work with patients, especially our vulnerable patients, to help them to access the best care.
